The School of Play Curriculum
Primary School Grade 3 & 4

This bonus activity section is packed with 24 game-based learning ideas designed to help educators transform everyday lessons into experiences that students genuinely look forward to. Drawing inspiration from board games, sports, and video games, each activity introduces simple yet powerful mechanics that turn learning into an active, engaging, and energetic experience. These are not just one-off ideas; they’re tried-and-tested approaches that bring subjects to life, encourage participation, and create an environment where students feel excited to be involved.
What makes this collection especially powerful is its flexibility. Alongside each structured activity are blank versions, allowing educators to adapt the core idea to any topic, age group, or learning goal. This opens the door for creativity, allowing teachers to experiment, take risks, and design lessons that truly connect with their students. At its heart, this section is about empowering educators to amplify both learning and well-being, creating classrooms where joy, curiosity, and meaningful engagement are at the centre of every experience.

Weekly Lessons
Icebreaker Board Game
The Icebreaker Board Game is a fun, interactive way to get people talking, moving, and connecting right from the start. Built around a simple board game and bingo-style mechanics, participants roll a dice, move around the board, and complete a mix of challenges ranging from answering prompts to finding others who match specific criteria. Each square is designed to spark conversation and encourage interaction, helping break down barriers in a natural and engaging way.
As players complete tasks, they mark off icons on their bingo cards by either finishing challenges or connecting with others in the room. The aim is to be the first to complete a line or to cross off the most icons within a set time. With a mix of movement, communication, and light competition, the game creates an energetic environment where participants quickly get to know each other, making it ideal for building relationships and setting a positive tone for any group.
Literacy Uno
UNO Literacy turns a simple deck of cards into a fast-paced, thinking-focused challenge that builds creativity and language skills. Working in pairs, students draw a card and respond to a literacy-based task linked to the colour, while the number determines how many answers they must come up with. From rhyming words to vocabulary challenges, each round pushes students to think quickly, collaborate, and expand their understanding of language in a fun and engaging way.
As the game progresses, the challenge increases, especially when students draw the same colour again and must come up with completely new answers. This keeps the thinking fresh and avoids repetition, encouraging deeper recall and creativity. It’s a simple yet powerful way to reinforce literacy concepts, promote teamwork, and keep students actively involved, all while maintaining the excitement and familiarity of a game they already love.

Mario Kart Challenge
Mario Kart Challenge brings the excitement of a classic racing game into a high-energy, real-world experience focused on movement, wellbeing, and teamwork. Participants race around a custom-built course, stopping at different stations to complete a mix of physical challenges, reflective tasks, and team-based activities. From gratitude prompts to quick fitness bursts, every lap keeps players engaged while blending fun with meaningful moments of connection and self-awareness.
What sets this game apart is the unpredictability and interaction between teams. Just like the original game, the mystery station introduces power-ups and challenges that can either boost your progress or slow others down, adding strategy, laughter, and friendly competition. As teams aim to complete as many laps as possible, they’re constantly moving, thinking, and working together. It’s an exciting way to combine fitness, mindset, and play into one unforgettable experience.
Mobile Phone Movement
Mobile Phone Movement takes something every student knows and turns it into a fast-paced, full body challenge. Using a giant phone keypad setup, participants “dial” numbers by moving through stations, completing an exercise for each digit. Whether it’s their own phone number, a friend’s, or something fun like a favourite place, every sequence keeps them active with minimal rest while adding a playful, familiar twist to movement.
What makes this game so versatile is how easily it extends beyond fitness. Students can spell words using the keypad, turning it into a literacy challenge, or solve maths problems and physically complete the answer through movement. It’s simple to set up, highly adaptable, and perfect as a brain break or lesson enhancer, blending learning, movement, and creativity in a way that keeps everyone engaged and thinking on the go.
