For families, the hardest part comes after the school bell rings when kids walk through the door carrying the weight of their day, tired, hungry, overstimulated, and still running on school-mode.
And most of the time, it's not because children are being difficult.
It's because transitions are hard when nervous systems haven't had the chance to reset, especially for children.
That's why after-school routines matter more than we realise.
Simple, predictable play acts as the bridge between school demands and a calmer evening. Science continues to show that it supports emotional regulation and helps children recover from the day by lowering stress without adding more pressure.
This week, we're exploring fun after-school play routines that support smoother transitions and help your family move from chaos to calm. Let's get started!

From Screen Battles to Family Connection
Everyone’s tired. Kids want screens. Parents want less conflict. And before long, the evening becomes a cycle of negotiations and “just five more minutes.”
Instead of screens being the default, FamilyBreak · Better Us Families turns screen time into earned kindness, movement, gratitude, and connection.
Short daily PEGG challenges (Play, Exercise, Gratitude, Giving), children earn Sparks that unlock screen time, while parents shift from policing screens to building healthier habits.
What makes this powerful is that it doesn’t rely on punishment, but instead creates a structure in which after-school stress becomes an opportunity for better choices.
Families move from daily arguments to daily habits that actually feel good.

Family Feud
Kids come home physically still, mentally overstimulated, but not yet regulated. That "second wind", in-between state is where tensions escalate quickly, especially when siblings are in the same space.
Family Feud is inspired by the hottest game show, which combines quick thinking and friendly competition, making it easy to burn off leftover energy throughout the day with movement and shared focus.
How to play:
Split kids into teams. Each round, read out a question that has four top answers. All teams write down their answer at the same time. Reveal answers together. If a team’s answer matches one of the top responses, they score points based on how common it is.
The twist: After scoring, each team chooses a movement challenge from a preset list in the PDF resource, such as short runs, squats, or burpees (If you're not a member yet, you can get creative and create your own list of questions and exercises!).
It works just as well in classrooms as it does in family settings. It’s structured chaos in the best way.

PHASE China: Play, People & Purpose
Over the past few days at PHASE China at Shanghai American School, we’ve been genuinely grateful to step into one of the most energising international education spaces we’ve experienced.
From running the pre-conference day, opening with the keynote, and facilitating workshops, to spending time with educators from 16 nationalities across 124+ schools, the level of openness and connection in the room stood out immediately. People weren’t just attending. They were fully present, curious, and ready to engage in meaningful change.
What made it even more powerful was seeing how strongly the message of play resonated across such a diverse group of educators.
We’re heading home inspired by the people we met, the conversations we had, and the shared belief that better learning environments start with better human connection.
PHASE China, thank you for having us. Shanghai, you were incredible!
